In the time I knew Howard, he was always consistent in his criticism of this country's two-party system. I didn't know much about Howard's all-socialist, pre-gay rights past, but perusing the San Francisco Voter Information Pamphlet for 1973 (they are online at the SFPL Web site), I discovered that Howard ran for the Board of Supervisors citywide (and Howard ran again in 1979 for the old District 5 seat that Harry Britt had been appointed to after Harvey Milk's assassination). In 1973, Howard listed his occupation as Socialist Worker (he was a member of the Socialist Worker's Party). At that time, Howard lived in the lower Haight (I always remember Howard's 14th Street flat). All of his 20-some ballot sponsors in 1973 were workers, students or unemployed.
