Dick was interviewed for an article on the bathhouse controversy in the April 1984 Coming Up!: Dick Pabich, a public relations professional with considerable experience in interpreting political trends, told Coming Up!, I don't think there's one straight person against the [Larry Littlejohn bathhouse regulation] initiative. And not all gays are against it either. Besides, it would be impossible to mount a campaign to defeat the initiative if it got on the ballot. Pabich further reflected, There's nothing you can say to Mr. and Mrs. Smith out there on 42nd Avenue so that they will support the bathhouses. This isn't at all like the 'No on 6' campaign.

The Examiner commissioned a poll of San Franciscans about the bathhouses and published the results on Sunday, April 8 (it appeared after Dick had been interviewed about Larry Littlejohn's proposed bathhouse regulation initiative for an article in Coming Up!). The poll results: 80% of respondents agreed that either (1) sex should be banned in the bathhouses (44%), or (2) the bathhouses should be closed altogether (36%). 14% felt that neither proposal would work; and 6% didn't know. For gays alone the results were: 34% agreed sex should be banned, 18% agreed baths should be closed, and 45% agreed that neither proposal would work.
