Steven Mehalko was one of the first doctors to care for me when I developed hepatitis B, back in 1978 while I lived in San Francisco, CA. I will ever so grateful to him for his care, and my recovery. I will miss you.
All the people who lost the fight against Aids will always be remembered by me. It was unfair the government stood by and did nothing!!It infuriates me to even think about it. I empathize and sympathize with anyone fighting for human rights. The emotional, physical and mental anguish these souls endures saddens me.I am now looking at volunteer opportunities to help yhe fight against aids and hiv. I feel I have to do something.
Coming here after seeing so much of the hard work this man put in, through all the various media and appearances he made. As a young gay man, I was not present for the HIV/AIDs crisis, but seeing the work of Dr Mehalko and his colleagues is inspiring. Where ever you are now - your legacy continues to inspire. Rest in Peace.
My lover of 21 years Michael James and I were patients of Steve Mehalko in his private practice in San Francisco from about 1983 until Michael’s death from AIDS in 1993. Steve was a great person and he became a friend. Needless to say he was a brilliant doctor. I am an old man now. 81 years old. Steve discovered that I stayed HIV negative through some unusual ( possibly genetic) circumstances. Steve died in 1999. I have remained HIV negative all these years while having several lovers die of HIV over the last 35 or so years. I want to thank Steve for helping me and thousands of other gay men through the labyrinth of joy and pain of life . Billy Cross wcross@gmail.com
