Paul was a member of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus from February, 1990 until February, 1993 for a total of 9 concert seasons. He last sang as a member of the Second Tenor section. The Chorus refers to these members who are no longer able to sing with the group as members of the "Fifth Section." Great history
Charles and I met when he came to Tulane, and we were great friends from the start. After college, we reconnected in 1970, and I lived with him and his lover Ric in Ann Arbor while finishing my dissertation. We became the best of friends (sisters) and moved to Washington DC together, where we owned a big Victorian at Logan Circle and hosted a gay 'commune' with years of stylish dinner parties and famous entertainments. When Charles' mental health deteriorated in the late 70s, he left to live with his parents (whom I also knew), and I was devastated--eventually also moving away to a new job in New York. We kept in long-letter touch for the rest of his life, and I suffered for him in his fits of depression and despair. He was the closest and dearest friend in my life--truly my soul-sibling, and as such he of course features prominently and lovingly in my third memoir GAY GEISHA.
