John, it will be twenty-five years this September since you died. I never said good-bye, I never really said how sorry I was about our messy breakup, never said how sorry I was that we were never able to resume being friends. We were comrades-in-arms politically and we ought to have remained good friends, but something between us never healed. I regret you're not here growing older with me and the few friends from that time that are left. So let these words, this farewell, be the healing and mending of our long-broken fence. I loved you once, long ago, and some spark of that remains.
