Jerry was a member of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus from April, 1981 until July, 1982 for a total of 6 concert seasons. He served the group as a member of the Board member and SFGMC Legal counsel section. The Chorus refers to these members who are no longer able to sing with the group as members of the "Fifth Section." Jerry Berg believed the gay community in San Francisco deserved the social services the straight community takes for granted. Jerry did the legal work that gave nonprofits the 50132 legal status they needed to operate Jerry chaired the Board of Permit Appeals and was a close associate of Dianne Feinstein. He also organized a group of leaders who helped defeat the Briggs Initiative that would have banned gay teachers. Jerry, Jim Hormel and Steve Endean founded the Human Rights Campaign Fund, now the Human Rights Campaign.
