John was 40 years old when he died. His roommate, Frank Richter, died in 2009, at 61. A march advocating universal health care was held in John's memory in September 1990.

Thanks for your and Sheldon Ramsdell's help with my hunger strike in early 1989, John. You were truly a bigger-than-life person. I remember passing the AIDS/ARC Vigil at the UN Plaza everyday when I went to law school in the early 1980's at Hastings. Thanks for starting that and everything else you did for the LGBT community in San Francisco, California and the US. I'll be seeing you soon enough.
