I miss you
Dear Larry, I was only 26yo when you died but you inspired my life in ways I have only begun to understand. From work in HIV research, helping in the emergence of our local AIDS service organization, HIV/AIDS case work in a womens prison and community health center, I fought the epidemic in your name. I went on to medical school and dedicated my life to the underserved and the human rights of patients. You would love that I also teach Zumba. I think of you dancing and DJing in parties and clubs back in the day and pretend you come to my class and bring the joy and fabulousness only you have.. Now, I feel called to tell your story anew as a proud witness to this history— a history you certainly helped create. Larry, the years are darkening again as they did 40 years ago. But, I will keep your mission to champion the oppressed, the forgotten, the imprisoned souls amongst us. I promise to try to love well, my family, my friends, and myself. Perhaps we will see an era of enlightenment return. The work continues. Farewell for now. Love, Maureen
