Don and I worked together for a while and two weeks before my 21st birthday we were leaving a Halloween Party at our coworkers home. He asked me where I was off to and I told him unenthusiastically. He said . Come bar hopping with me. Told him . My birthday isnt for two more weeks and dont have ID. He says . I know a place. Follow me. I follow him to this neighborhood strip mall in Campbell right on the border of Los Gatos. Typical strip mall with a supermarket, dry cleaners, a bar or two, etc. We both park and when were out of our cars, he says to me . Just walk in like youve been here a hundred times before. I nod. He says, hope you dont mind, this is a gay bar. Im trying to be all cool and say . I dont give a fvk. He gets this big wide grin and says . I didnt think you would. 🤣🤣🤣 Huh 🤷‍♂️ I always thought I had been doing a pretty good job of passing for straight. 🤣🤣🤣 Walking through that door of the Desperados Bar that night led me on the path to leaving my pretend self behind and to the beginning of me being my most authentic self. It also introduced me to some very good friends, many of whom I am still friends with today, 47 years later and many more, like Don, who sadly left us far too early many years ago. Thank you Don !!! Ill always be grateful for your help getting me on the right path !!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
