Bill was a member of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus. He joined in September, 1990 and sang in the bass section. He was also the partner of fellow Chorus member Tom McQueen. The Chorus refers to these members who are no longer able to sing with the group as members of the Fifth Section.
