Gary loved his time in San Francisco - it was a time of exploration and acceptance as well as a time of new life-long friendships. I believe Gary moved to SF in 1989 - and joined the SFGMC chorus that year. Gary left SF in 1994 to live with me in suburban Philadelphia and later in NJ. Gary moved with his miniature dachshund Lena, named after his mother, and Bently, his pot-bellied (and not truly miniature) pig. Gary met and eventually overcame the many obstacles that life threw at him - an emotional and physically abusive father, alcoholism, HIV and cancer. But during his last battle against cancer it appeared that he had come to peace with all the negative things that had happened to him and instead focused more on the blessings that he had been given. I learnt so much from him, and miss him today on the 12th anniversary of the last night of his life. Thank you Tom, for putting this site up and for helping remind us of the impact that those who are listed here have made in our lives.

Gary was a member of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus from September, 1989 until January, 1994 for a total of 10 concert seasons. He was a member of the First Tenor section, as am I. Gary and I struck up a friendship at his first rehearsal and remained close through the rest of his life. I became aware that he kept a daily journal and the passage he wrote after that first rehearsal has been presented at Chorus events to show how much SFGMC meant to him. The Chorus refers to these members who are no longer able to sing with the group as members of the "Fifth Section." They are listed Chorus programs and on the group's website: https://www.sfgmc.org/about_fifth.shtml
